Prima will be exhibiting at Backing Britain 3.0 this month. The brand new innovative exhibition format is set to welcome thousands of visitors to the 3D virtual environment, which will continue to run for the entire year after the event takes place after 26th-28th April. It will also see three in-person events connecting 300+ manufacturers with talks from industry leaders and celebrity guests.
The aim of the Backing Britain Expo from The Made in Group is to connect hundreds of manufacturers across the region in an immersive, interactive, and environmentally friendly way. Over the last 18 months or so, businesses have had to propel themselves into the digital, whether it be working from home or diversifying their business processes. Digital isn't going anywhere, and forward-thinking businesses need to get up to speed now so they aren't left behind in the future. This is why we are excited to be part of Backing Britain 3.0.

We are delighted to commission a new ALeader Europe full 3D inline Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) machine at our facility. The new AOI machine delivers rapid and precise inspection as well as many other beneficial features. The new machine perfectly suits Prima’s transition to an integrated Surface Mount Assembly (SMA) line production model and will help us further improve quality and production efficiency.

We would like to introduce you to Bill Nisbet (Operations Manager), Samantha Critchley (Internal Sales Manager) and Neil Hinchliffe (Customer Experience Manager). Last week a cross-functional Prima team completed the first set of business improvement workshops facilitated by Goldratt (UK). The workshops focus on improving business processes based on the Theory of Constraints – namely identify constraints in various business processes and finding solutions to maximise performance. This activity is an integral part of Prima’s growth strategy through continuous improvement and investment in people.

Prima Electronic Services Ltd. has been awarded Silver in the UK Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. This demonstrates our commitment to the Armed Forces. We recognise the importance of supporting our Reservists, providing the time and space they require while cultivating the valuable transferable skills our Veterans bring to the business. Our aim is to further develop our support to the Armed Forces by strengthening links to the various regional networks through our Armed Forces Champion.

Prima is pleased to announce the successful completion of the EPICOR Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system implementation project. The cloud-based ERP is a significant investment for Prima and it is expected to deliver significant efficiencies across the whole business, benefiting all our customers.

Prima Electronic Services has utilised its engineering experience and knowhow to help with healthcare work in the developing world. Cambridge-based start-up Simprints supplies fingerprint sensor modules to countries including Tanzania, Ethiopia and Bangladesh. These provide the means to accurately identify people in places where the forms of documentation which are commonplace in high-income economies are simply not available. In such situations, biometrics offer an effective alternative.

Cambridgeshire-based contract manufacturer Prima Electronic Services has underlined its ability to address customers’ needs within an ultra-short period. Together with leading product development firm TTP plc, the company was recently assigned to work on a major project for Pitney Bowes, the global technology company whose sending technology is used by industries all over the world - including the postal sector. Despite the global pandemic and national lockdowns slowing progress, we have had an extremely successful 2020 and have seen steady growth putting us in a stronger position. Through careful operational planning and active steps taken in line with the Government guidelines, we have remained operational throughout the year while protecting our staff members, enabling the full suite of Prima services to remain available to our customers without any interruptions.
We have a high degree of confidence that 2021 will be a fantastic year for us as national restrictions begin to ease, enabling further Prima improvements projects to be executed. Some of these developments include a transition to integrated SMA lines, initially limited to the printers and SMA machines but extending later in the year to incorporate reflow and inspection. In order to cultivate young technology-motivated talent, Prima has established a multi-faceted apprentice program. Working in conjunction with Cambridge Regional College, this program is designed to give participants a solid foundation in manufacturing-based engineering.
The initial apprentice intake at Prima’s St Ives plant began back in January, with additional trainees starting a few months earlier. Splitting their time between the college (1 day a week) and the production site (4 days a week), they are all due to complete their respective programs in the mid 2022 timeframe. READ MORE

To show deserved appreciation for all those serving in the British Armed Forces, and the huge sacrifice and commitment they make in protecting our nation, the management team of Prima Electronic Services have signed the Armed Forces Covenant. In doing this, the company pledges its full support to the armed forces community. Several members of the Prima team are currently involved in the Army Cadets, where they help young people to develop important life skills that will be of use to them in the future. With this in mind, it is important that these individuals get the employment flexibility they need to enable them to participate in such activities.

In order to further boost throughput levels, Prima Electronic Services has taken steps to upgrade its production lines via the installation of new state-of-the-art SMT placement machines. These additions to the existing complement of placement machines comprise of an iineo+ from Europlacer, plus a Yamaha i-Pulse S20. As well as accelerating the assembly process, the newly installed equipment will enable larger and more complex PCBs to be addressed. It will also mean that even the smallest of component parts can be placed on to PCBs with accurate positioning - significantly reducing component placing errors and thereby enhancing yield figures.

Prima Electronic Services has now completed two projects, conducted in cooperation with the University of Cambridge’s Institute for Manufacturing (IfM), that are intended to improve operations at the company’s St Ives’ production facility. Over the course of these projects, detailed mapping and analysis of Prima’s process flows was undertaken. Based on the compiled data, it will subsequently be possible to get a better overview of all the materials used in manufacturing work and what levels of stock will be required at particular stages. The long-term objective, using this data, is to implement a comprehensive enterprise resource planning (ERP) system that will make production activities more streamlined and efficient, as well as reducing potential sources of wastage and keeping overall costs down.
